YOGA ON THE BEACH AT PLAYA TESORO ECO-RESORT

Open Space Yoga is partnering with the Ladner owners of a new eco-resort in Nicaragua for an 8 day, 7 night retreat, from January 19th to 26th, 2018.

Join Wendy, Sue, and Gerry at Playa Tesoro Resort on a secluded 3 km stretch of sandy beach on the Pacific Ocean, two hours from Nicaragua’s capital city of Managua, just south of the colonial city of Leon.

Daily Yoga

Wendy and Sue will be teaching two yoga classes per day at Playa Tesoro’s oceanside pavilion, as well as giving four “yogic lifestyle” sessions in the evenings:

Eating Consciously/Sattvic Foods

Sattvic foods are beneficial for all Doshas (body types) for digestion and elimination. Wendy will explain how a Sattvic diet is healthy for both your body and mind.

The Power of Giving/Seva

Using our energy and positivity to benefit others is a practice that benefits the giver. Wendy will discuss the power of Seva, or service.

Dharma Code

You are born with a unique purpose that is embedded in your dharmic code. Sue will show you how to move through doubt and fear to a place of contribution.

Introduction to the Goddesses

Sue leads a journey into storytelling, mantra, and meditation, invoking the goddesses Durga, Kali, and Lakshmi.

In between classes, you’ll dine on gourmet food prepared by a local chef, featuring fresh fish, and chicken, fruit, and vegetables from the resort’s own farm. You can choose to spend your days walking the beach, playing in the gentle surf, reading a book in a hammock – or you can join us for a full itinerary of activities.

Trip highlights will include…

In addition to daily yoga sessions, we’ll tour the colonial city of Leon, visit Juan Venado Nature Reserve, and for those who want to try something completely new, go volcano boarding! Resort owner, John Bramwell, advises us that temperatures at that time of year average 32 to 34⁰C with a breeze.

At the resort, you can learn to surf in gentle waves, paddleboard on the river estuary, or hop on a bike and do a bit of local exploring. The turtle hatchery next door will be wrapping up for the season, but if we are lucky, we may be able to release the last baby turtles of the season. There will be plenty to do (or not do) for yogis and non-yogis alike!

7 YogaRetreat LeonStreet 1

Nicaragua is on the travel radar as one of Central America’s safest destinations, and is often billed as “how Costa Rica used to be.” John and Geoff Bramwell have lived in Nicaragua and feel that the best travel experiences bring you face-to-face with the local culture. On one of our retreat days, you will have the opportunity to participate in a community improvement day in the town of Salinas Grandes.

Here’s what a week at Playa Tesoro might look like…

A sample itinerary is provided below – tours and activities are optional, you’re free to spend the week walking the beach or reading in your hammock. We’re still firming up the details, but if you have any questions, please call Wendy Robertsen at 604-315-2773 or email us at frontdesk@openspaceyoga.com.

DAY 1: Jan 19 – Arrival day (Managua to Playa Tesoro)

Airport arrival and pick-up.  Morning to mid-day flight arrival is preferred.  Tesoro transporter will pick up guests at Managua airport. We are approximately 2.5 hours from the capital to the beach, including a meal/beverage stop on route, plus an opportunity to pick up drinks and snacks for your room at a local grocery store.

If the timing is right, you’ll be able to enjoy a stunning sunset as you settle into your rooms and get ready for a delicious, fresh seafood dinner.

DAY 2: Jan 20 – Day at Playa Tesoro

Wake up to a morning yoga session at the pavilion, fresh Nicaraguan coffee, fruit and smoothies. After the morning session, yogis and non-yogis alike can hit the breakfast buffet.

8 Restaraunt

At breakfast, owner John Bramwell will introduce you to the resort, and talk about the logistics of upcoming activities.

Then the day is yours to relax and recover from your trip: on the beach, in a pool, porch-side in a hammock, or on the massage table.

For those with energy, introductory surfing lessons start at 10:30, boogie boards and stand-up paddleboards are available all day, and pool volleyball is likely to break out at any time in the red casita pool! We’ll also offer a 1-hour light Spanish class – because everyone needs to know how to ask for a beer and bathroom!

In the evening, we’ll have another yoga session and then, if we’re lucky, we’ll be able to release the last baby turtles of the season from Tortuga Vivero turtle hatchery next door. This activity is not guaranteed as the release season may have ended. What is guaranteed, is another gorgeous sunset!

Sunset over pool

DAY 3: Jan 21 – Day trip to Leon or volcano boarding

Start your day at Tesoro with yoga, swimming or surfing, fresh Nicaraguan coffee and a healthy breakfast.

For those who want to tour the colonial City of Leon, we’ll drive for about 45 minutes, and then disembark for a walking tour of the cathedral and museums, including a vegetarian lunch and opportunities to shop.

For those who want to try something different, we’ll go volcano boarding on Cerro Negro Volcano.

Both trips will return to Tesora about 3pm in the afternoon, with time for a nap and a cold drink, or a swim, before the evening yoga session and Sunset dinner at 6pm.

DAY 4: Jan 22 – Tesoro surfing and boat trip day

Start your day at Tesoro with yoga, swimming or surfing, fresh Nicaraguan coffee and a healthy breakfast.

The boat will leave from the estuary at Playa Tesoro for a nature-watching tour – be sure to bring your cameras and binoculars to spot birds and other wildlife in the mangroves.

We’ll take any avid surfers to some of the larger surf breaks in the area or, if we have a larger number of guests who would like a longer boat tour, we’ll head up the River Tamarindo with a picnic lunch.

We’ll try not to get too much sun on this day, as we have a big night ahead. Boats return to Playa Tesoro around 3pm.

2 Surfers

Late afternoon, we’ll head to Leon as a group for nightlife and dancing in the colonial epicenter of Nicaragua where you can sample the local cervezas and rum, listen to live local bands, and dance the night away. We’ll return around 10pm.

DAY 5: Jan 23 – Community Improvement Day in Salinas Grandes

Start your day at Tesoro with yoga, swimming or surfing, fresh Nicaraguan coffee and a healthy breakfast.

For those who want to participate, we’ll head into the nearby small town of Salinas Grandes to join in a day with the locals. Playa Tesora will be setting up a printer and camera; local families can have their picture taken, printed, and framed in popsicle stick frames made by local kids.

We’ll return to Playa Tesoro in time for yoga and dinner.

DAY 6:  Jan 24 – Day at Playa Tesoro

Start your day at Tesoro with yoga, swimming or surfing, fresh Nicaraguan coffee and a healthy breakfast.

Today, you can stay at the resort, or take a tour of Finca Tesoro garden or, perhaps, do some fishing on the estuary. If guests are interested, we’ll do a 1-hour boat trip down the estuary and out onto the ocean to El Transito for lunch and a swim in this unique swimming hole behind a rock wall.

Back to the resort in time for yoga, and then a picnic dinner at the Punta on the south end of the island, which offers the best view of the sunset.

DAY 7: Jan 25 – Day at Playa Tesoro

Start your day at Tesoro with yoga, swimming or surfing, fresh Nicaraguan coffee and a healthy breakfast. Our last day at the resort is an opportunity to refine your surfing skills, paddle down the estuary, or just relax in a hammock. Two yoga sessions, plus delicious meals and, of course, that beautiful sunset!

DAY 8: Jan 26th – Departure day

One last Nicaraguan breakfast and then, depending on guests’ and teachers’ flight times, we may be able to get in one last yoga session at the beach pavilion before we have to head to the Managua airport.
